Clear and powerful sound
A hallmark of the Olympus LS series has always been superior sound quality, and the LS-12 takes that reputation to a new level. The LS-12 features two new internal 90-degree directional stereo condenser microphones with a frequency response of 60 Hz to 20 kHz, allowing the user to capture lower-bass frequencies. This makes the LS-12 an ideal recorder for an incredibly loud environment as it supports sound pressure levels up to 130 decibels, more than enough to capture extreme sound from a rock band. Microphone sensitivity is adjustable – with a choice of High, Middle or Low, suitable for everything from the biggest concert to the most intimate one-on-one rehearsal.
A true companion for musicians, the LS-12 includes a chromatic tuner to keep you in key. Users also have the option to depict waveforms on the built-in screen. This provides the opportunity, for example, to check whether a stable pitch has been played and held over a certain timeframe. Meanwhile, the metronome function, indicated by a flashing LED, will keep you in time. Overdubbing lets users record over a file or section of music while listening to it, which is then saved together as a new file. Furthermore, tracks can be divided and then incremented to assist in getting the track just right. On board file trimming is also available allowing the user to edit files without the use of a computer.
The LS-12 comes with 2 GB of on-board memory. This can be boosted using the SD/SDHC slot (up to 32 GB) for added versatility. A tripod hole on the back of the unit allows for easy attachment to a tripod for hands free recording.
Banish background noise and get a head start
The LS-12 isn't just about great looks and fantastic audio quality; creativity and flexibility is also high on its enticing agenda. Ambient sound recording is given a boost via a switchable low-cut filter with two levels: 100 Hz or lower, or 300 Hz and lower. Unwanted background noises generated from air conditioning or projectors, for instance, are now a nuisance of the past.
Audio activity can be pre-empted with the LS-12’s clever Pre-Record Buffer, enabling the capture of several seconds of sound occurring before the record button has even been pressed.
