This Marumi Infrared filter allows infrared (IR) light to pass through to the camera and blocks all or most of the visible light spectrum at the same time. When this filter is used with infrared sensitive film or sensors plus proper photographing technique, various effects such as ‘false-colour’ and “Wood Effect” can be obtained. It creates unusual and unique image with drastic colour contrast.
Infrared wavelength is a wavelength longer than that of visible light, but shorter than that of microwaves. Wavelengths range from about 700 nm to about 900 nm. Since we’re not able to see infrared, we are not aware of how everyday objects reflect it. Photos taken with infrared are often surprising. This filter falls on 700nm spectrum.
Digital camera sensors are inherently sensitive to infrared light which would interfere with the normal photography. That’s why many digital cameras employ infrared blockers. You need extremely long time exposure (could be as long as 30 seconds) to obtain desirable effect. UV/IR filter of some cameras can be removed. You can install this Marumi IR filter on it after removing the filter but you have to check with your camera manual to see whether the UV/IR filter is removable.
